I love Rocky IV. In fact I love all the Rocky movies but Rocky IV is awesome.

ROCKY-IV_610_0

The reason I love Rocky is because he never quits. Essentially the movie is a ”If you don’t give up on your dreams you can accomplish anything” story. In every fight Rocky has, he always seems to take a huge beating in the beginning. Most fighters wouldn’t get up after a thrashing like that but Rocky always did. He always finished the fight whether he won or lost.

Unlike most sports movies, Rocky isn’t about winning, it’s about the underdog proving himself. It’s about overcoming expectations. It’s about doing more than you ever thought you could.

The thing I find most inspiring about Rocky is… The back story. It’s the story of how Rocky even became a movie. It’s the ultimate underdog story of Sly Stallone.

I was so inspired by Rocky that I decided to do some boxing coaching (you may be thinking why didn’t I want to get in the ring myself. The truth is that I spent far too much time as a kid getting into scraps that my days of getting hit were over. Plus for me at the time I was already PT-ing so a qualification in Boxing was another string to the bow).

I qualified as a boxing coach through Boxercise UK. A worldwide recognised qualification which is thought to be the number one boxing fitness qualification.

Anyway enough about me. Let’s talk about you.

The reason I am talking to you about boxing is because we now offer a Results Boxing Bootcamp class.

Here is WHY You Should Do This…

A Full Body Workout

Boxing is a two-for-one cardio and strength workout, boxing targets the entire body. In addition to boosting strength and cardio fitness, boxing improves a number of skill-related parameters of fitness including balance, coordination, reactivity, and agility.

Boxing Incinerates Fat Fast

And with a potential burn rate of 13 calories a minute, plan to punch away anywhere from 200 to 400 calories* per half hour. Thirty minutes of boxing in a ring torches 400 calories; 30 minutes of punching a bag burns 200 calories; and 30 minutes sparring with a partner blasts 300 calories.  Boxing is perhaps the ultimate High Intensity Interval Workout

*All estimates based on a 140-pound individual

Blitz The Belly Fat and Strengthen Your Core

Boxing is extremely taxing on your core muscles. Every punch requires you to twist from your hips engaging your rectus abdominus, obliques, transverse abdominus and many other of the abdominal musculature.

Boxing Knocks Out Your Stress

Had a long day at the office, you have paper work coming out of your ears, kids are driving you insane whatever’s got you ready to snap, boxing will help you calm down. There’s nothing better to release some stress than punching a mitt or a heavy bag. The adrenaline that is released during boxing creates an optimal hormonal response. Not only is hitting something a healthy and productive way to help you let go of tension, the rush of endorphins released are also likely to make you happier too.

And My Favourite Reason…It Made Hilary Swank a Machine

Here is what Hilary Swank did to get in shape for her role in the movie Million Dollar Baby

  • Hilary Swank ate protein and low carbohydrates diet during the preparation of her role. She consumed about 4,000 calories a day, significantly more than an average woman would eat.

  • She had to eat about 210 grams of protein daily. However, because the body can only absorb so much protein in one meal, she was told to eat protein rich meals every 4.5 hours.

  • In addition to protein, she drank flax oil which contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seed oil provides about 1,000 calories a day, a quarter of her daily intake.

  • As for carbs, she ate no more than 50 grams a day.

As Swank ate little carbohydrates, her body would use stored fat as energy. So, flax oil will stoke the metabolism to help burn the fat and digest the protein she had eaten. In this case, the oil provided high quality calories for muscle building without affecting the fat burning process. The end goal is to build muscle yet at the same time, reduce body fat percentage.

  • Initially, Hilary thought that boxing was easy. After trying out her first 3-minute round, she realised that it was much more difficult than seen. Ever since then, she put much effort to practice 2 hours daily by sparring and hitting the heavy bag as well as the speed bag.
