Happy Monday,

Hope you all had a great weekend. There was plenty on, so lot’s to choose from, aswell as the option of resting and rejuvenating at home 🙂 We had a weekend of out and about which was great however a slow Sunday afternoon was welcomed by all at home.

Anyway, on to the post for today. I was having a discussion with a client of mine who is a Dentist. She was saying that for the most part people don’t get their teeth looked at until they’re in enough pain.

The current research suggests that everyone should visit the Dentist every six months or at least on a regular basis.

That said most people are visiting the Dentist nowhere near as regularly as they should and it is said that almost half of adults aged 30 and older, about 65 million, have a form of chronic inflammatory gum disease that can ultimately lead to tooth loss.

That’s a problem.

It is said that modern medicine is overwhelmingly reactive but I would argue that it is people who are reactive. If people were more proactive about their health, things would look a little different.

What if we treated our health like we treat our cars…

Do you change the oil in your car?
Do you get your wheels aligned?
Do you get a warrant of fitness?

People know the importance of basic car care yet when it comes to their body, it’s a whole other story.

Yes you may go to the gym on a regular basis but are you moving well? Are you simply loading dysfunction?

What would happen if your wheels on your car were not aligned? You would get them looked at. Am I right?

Simply driving faster (going to the gym more often) would run the car to the ground far quicker.

The reason you should go to the Dentist every 6 months is to get a check up. A check up is a quick screen to see if anything is a problem.

When you go to the Doctors they almost always do a blood pressure check. A quick 2 minute non invasive screen. A BP screen simply tells the doctor if he/she should investigate further.

In fitness (movement) we have the Functional Movement Screen (FMS). A preventative musculoskeletal screen that looks for signs of dysfunction in order to prevent rather than having to deal with symptoms once an injury has occurred.

You may feel fine BUT that doesn’t mean you don’t have an underlying movement dysfunction that in weeks, months, maybe years may well just be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Who is the FMS for?

If you move, then the FMS is for you. It’s a screen that many athletes uses for dysfunction, limitation of sporting performance.

Here is a shot of Liverpool FC, Spurs, Bayern Munich & LeBron James using the FMS

You might be thinking “why the photos of these pro athletes?”

By posting pics of these guys the hope is that you might just say “if it’s good enough for them, then it’s good enough for me’’

I believe that our movement is a fundamental piece of our health. The FMS is something that I am hugely passionate about and it is the pinnacle of movement screening around the world.

We need to take our health back. Taking responsibility is at the core of a preventative model of health.

Do yourself a favour and book a FMS and while you’re at it…  book a dental check up too 🙂
