bingo

Krystie Millward, Personal Trainer Havelock North shares with you one of the most frequently asked questions from her female clients… ‘I do everything but my bingo wings will not shift’.

Unfortunately ladies, the fat on your triceps is the last place to go when losing weight and no matter how many tricep extensions and dips you do, you will not be able to spot reduce this area through exercise alone.

But don’t lose hope, fortunately research has shown that people who tend to store excessive fat in this area, have an imbalance of hormones – have lower levels of testosterone and excess levels of estrogen. Now hold on there, you said low levels of testosterone, isn’t this a good thing for females? Yes and no. Everyone requires a certain level of testosterone to function and if you have too low testosterone, common symptoms may be low energy levels, sleep disruption, decreased libido, lean muscle loss, depression … only to name a few. So yes, not only will a lack of testosterone have the above side effects, you will get those annoyingly flabby stubborn bingo wings!

With the beauty regime women go through daily, ie washing their hair, face, lathering moisturiser on their body etc, all the toxins in the products are contributing to their high levels of estrogen. Not to mention their unhealthy lifestyles that may include smoking, drinking and/or eating processed foods. This is not only affecting hormones, it affects your liver.

Research shows that women and tricep fat is closely correlated to liver toxicity. Now when I say a toxic liver, it doesn’t mean your liver is failing, all it means is over the years you have accumulated a toxic overload in your body affecting your hormonal function. It may be as easy as giving your liver a break and doing a detox, however it may go deeper than that, especially if you find you store excessive amounts of fat on your triceps however are fairly lean all over. There are people who genetically do not methylate B vitamins well and this leads to poor detoxification processes. When you eat foods rich in B vitamins, it has to attach to a methyl donor to be absorbed and if you are naturally a poor methylator you will become deficient in B vitamins very quickly.

So what can I do?

Here are 7 steps you can take to help reduce those bingo wings and start absorbing the B vitamins to kick start your liver again.

  1. Increase your protein intake. This includes meat, chicken, fish and eggs, anything that comes from an animal
  2. Take a good quality magnesium supplement
  3. Take a methylated B-Vitamin supplement as well as a topical B vitamin. This will help you absorb the B vitamins which will give the liver a helping hand
  4.  Take a look at your beauty products and check the labels. If they have any nasties such as sodium lauryl sulphate in then throw them away. Change to natural products, but don’t be mistaken for the word ‘natural’ as most of these are not. Head to your health store and have a look at their range
  5. Eat whole, organic foods where possible. Minimise or eliminate all processed foods.
  6. Lift weights and make sure you move on a daily basis.
  7. Get your hormones checked by a Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist

Give these seven steps a go and watch those bingo wings transform.
