In 2019 Dr Kris D’Aout, Senior Lecturer in Musculoskeletal and ageing science at the University of Liverpool, together with a PhD student, conducted a remarkable piece of research where they measured the increase in foot strength wearing vivobarefoot shoes showing there was a 60% improvement in foot strength after just six months of reconnecting to the function of their feet through wearing barefoot shoes.

In another study, titled ‘Preventing falls in older people by an innovative connected shoe: development and biomechanics study’, D’Aout discovered that balance in Vivobarefoot shoes is improved by up to 40% compared to regular padded shoes.

Said another way, wearing foot coffins you will lose 60% of foot strength and 40% balance.

We are made to feel the ground. I get it… your fancy Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Asics make you feel like you’re walking on fluffy clouds. But what’s the cost of walking on those fluffy clouds? If you were to wear a big cushiony glove on your hands everyday, you would soon lose the dexterity to write and type. You would lose the tactile skin to skin feedback of touch and feel. As I write this I am sitting next to my guitar trying to imagine playing it with gloves on.
