Happy Monday

How was your weekend?

A tad on the windy side?

This weekend Krystie, Milly, Oakey and I all went on our first family camping trip. Probably not the best weekend to go camping but what the hey.

In fact it wasn’t so much the wind but the wedding 50 meters away. Yes the bass was thumping until 3am..Not good for a nights sleep in the great outdoors. Nonetheless it was a great weekend away.

In today’s newsletter I thought I would share with you some tips and tricks for staying healthy on a trip away.

1  – Our new Weber barbecue

I have to admit, it took me some convincing to get a Weber. I just didn’t get what all the fuss was about. But now I see, the beauty of the Weber is that not only does it cook food so well but it fits in the car boot and it can be taken anywhere. We didn’t have to rely on small camping stove tops or the camp kitchen.

2 – Biltong

I love me a bit of Biltong. And the Canterbury Biltong Company do a pretty decent bag. It’s not perfect and does have a very small amount of sugar added but on the flip side it’s high in protein, low in carbohydrates, gluten free, preservative free, export grade beef.

I brought chilli flavour in the hope Milly wouldn’t eat it. I was wrong 🙁

3 – Mediterranean Salad

This is one of my go-to’s for a quick and easy salad.

To make it ‘’BIG’’ so it feeds us

Ingredients

2 cucumbers

7 tomatoes

1 pack of goats feta

Glug of extra virgin olive oil

Pinch of sea salt

Method

Chop it all up into small pieces. Season with olive oil and sea salt. Serve. Happy Days!

4 – Meat

Yes, meat for the barbeque. We brought some grass fed steak and some sausages from Harmony meats. According to Harmony’s website they go to extraordinary lengths to ensure their meats go from paddock to plate with absolute care at every stage. They are grass fed, no pens, no cages only paddocks

5 – Hawthorne’s Organic Harvest Fair Trade and my Aeropress

Coffee. I love the stuff..If I am honest maybe a little too much. But do you know what I love more than coffee? Making my coffee in an aeropress.

The aeropress is easy to transport, can make a coffee in less than 2 minutes and it makes for a rich and super smooth coffee. For the coffee snobs I recommend using the inverted method as I find it makes a superior coffee.

You should know  – Coffee is highly sprayed. Go organic if you can

6 – Dark Salted Burnt Caramel

Because you can’t be good all the time. Alter Eco make a a very good single origin Ecuadorian organic chocolate. The Ecuadorian coast has some of the richest soil and shade from the forest canopy which creates an ideal environment for native cacao.

Lying under the stars (actually it was clouds) eating salt and burnt caramel chocolate what more do I need to say

So there you have it. Though we weren’t perfect it could have been a lot worse. The key with maintaining health while you are away is planning.

Lesson learned – Always check to see if there is a wedding at the camp ground. If so, don’t go
