Three Little Pigs, Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Three Musketeers. The rule of thirds in photography, the rule of three in speech writing and apparently bad things always happen in three’s

Everywhere you look in life you will find things in 3’s. There is a certain magic to the number three, in fact there is even a latin phrase “omne trium perfectum” (everything that comes in threes is perfect)

Here are just a few things I have noted about the magic of three in training, nutrition and life

Goals

It’s always important to have goals with different time durations. Small goals repeatedly accomplished lead to big goals

Immediate checklist – what 3 things will you focus on this week

Short term goals – 3 weeks (enough time to see some positive differences)

Medium term – 3 months (the perfect time for a transformation)

The big one – 3 years (the beginnings of mastery)

Habits

Contrary to popular belief it takes around 66 days to ingrain a habit. That said

An unbroken chain of 3 weeks will be enough time to feel the positive benefits of that habit

Relationships

Tell someone 3 times and no more

The first time you hope to educate. The second time present in a different way to ensure clarity, the third time is to simply get your point across

If you can’t do it in 3 attempts then you may well be wasting your time and effort

As they say ‘you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink’

Hobbies

Have 3 hobbies

One that makes you healthy (results)

One that makes you wealthy

One that allows for your creativity to shine through

Investments

Having 3 types of investments for the win

One long-term, low risk and boring

One medium term, medium risk

One big high stake gamble with high rewards and high risk

The 3rd space

Work, home and the 3rd space

For most this is the coffee shop or pub. Do yourself a favour and find a 3rd space that inspires you to be better

Choose a fitness space, a library or even an art gallery

Savings

Have at least 3 months of savings put away. Just in case you lose your job or a pandemic decides to sweep the world

Friends

Of the 3000 of your social media friends, know that

300 are noisy and looking to see if their lives are better than yours

30 have some genuine interest in what’s going on with your life

3 are good friends and will have your back

Workouts

3 good workouts a week is recommended for anyone of any level. Some people may do more but I would argue that 3 quality workouts is all you need

Strength

If you want to get seriously strong – 3 reps of a heavy enough weight will light up your nervous system and motor units

Macronutrients

There are 3 main macronutrients – protein, carbs and fats. Ensure that you eat all three for optimal health

Hydration

If you are small then 3 pints of water and if you are big 3 litres of water a day

Supplements

There are 3 supplements that I think everyone would benefit to be on

Magnesium

Fish oil

Greens powder

Alcohol

3 drinks is the perfect amount to release inhibition but not too much to leave you in a whole world of hangover pain the next day

Emails

Only check them 3 times per day

Check them in the morning to catch up and give instruction

Check them briefly at lunch

Check them before you leave work and tie up any loose ends

Survival

You can survive for 3 Minutes without air

You can survive for 3 Hours without shelter in a harsh environment

You can survive for 3 Days without water

So there you have it, the magic of three.
