Happy Monday Everyone,

Hope you had a great weekend. Most people start a New Year with fitness goals. Whether you want to get fit, lose weight, add muscle, strength, whatever it is, there is tons of information out there to assist or not in some cases.

The Fitness Industry is a funny space at times. I absolutely love it and that’s why I have dedicated over 20 years of my life to it. BUT there are things about it that suck.

I find (especially this time of year) there are so many myths being banded around by celebrities, magazines and media that no one knows what to believe

Should I be Vegan, Paleo, Keto or should I just intermittently fast for 16 hours of the day?

It can be very confusing and frustrating to know what to do. To add fuel to the fire even the ‘so called experts’ spend their days arguing over what’s the best method.

If people in the know, don’t know then how’s anyone supposed to know.

Here are 4 things in the fitness industry that are good reminders when considering fitness

1 – Just because Jonny Biceps and Ashley Abs are in amazing shape it doesn’t make them an expert or qualify them to give good advice

Instagram is inundated with Jonny and Ashley’s. Some give great advice but many are throwing out terrible advice hoping to get unsuspecting Julie from accounts to buy their products.

Check that who you’re listening to has credentials, time in the trenches and has been through the journey.

2 – Many ‘experts’ will push their agenda

Crossfit lovers will tell you that the only way to get in shape is olympic lifting, gymnastics and met con.

The bodybuilders will tell you it’s all about the split routines and 200 exercises for chest or glutes.

The kettlebell guy will sell you on this one kettlebell will do everything you need and that you don’t need any other equipment.

The supplement guy will tell you this magic powder is an extract of rainbow tears and will give you a 6 pack in less than 3 weeks.

The truth is there are many ways to skin a cat and everything I have mentioned above are simply tools. I personally use them all but I know its all about the right tool for the right job.

3 – The media will often print complete nonsense in order to get your attention

The job of the media is NOT to print truth but to get your attention.

‘Study shows that 4 minutes of exercise will increase fat loss by 400%’

‘Study shows that protein causes cancer’

‘Study shows that gluten will cause rapid ageing’

The media will always try and be as controversial as they can be to get you sucked in (much like the title of this post 😉

I say common-sense goes along way

4 – Science will continue to expand, discover new ideas, advancements and grow

This isn’t a bad thing, in fact it’s great but many will jump on the next trend or bandwagon.

Things do change, but much will remain the same

Much of what I see today is the same as it was 20 years ago just in a new shiny wrapper with a new name.

Your physiology is millions of years old, it hasn’t really changed. The basics of what worked then, will work now. Eat real food, move and sleep well.
