Happy New Year – 2017!

I hope that you all had a wonderful new year and have been enjoying the holiday season.

Krystie and I are back from our trip and what a trip it was.

A couple of days in LA, chilling in Venice Beach area, sipping coffee, swing hopping (for Milly) and people watching. Then on to the UK, where we met with and made great memories with friends and family. France for a week, eat, chill and afternoon siestas were on the cards, then back to the UK for Christmas. Finishing off in LA again for a night, 26 degrees chilling at Manhattan Beach. From start to finish it was magical and like all holidays, it came to an end far too quickly.  But we are pleased to be back!

As we are now in 2017 I thought I would share some tips with you as to ‘how to beat the odds and actually achieve some of those new year’s resolutions

Did you know that only 8% of people are successful with their new year’s resolutions.

Pretty pathetic don’t you think?

You have more chance of developing heart disease, cardiovascular disease or skin cancer than you do actually achieving your new year’s goal.

Here are 6 tips to overcome the odds

1 – Learn from your failures

If your previous new year’s resolution didn’t come to fruition then stop and ask yourself why. Look back at past failures and figure out what it was that went wrong, Maybe you didn’t have a plan, maybe you were trying to go it alone or maybe you were trying to take on too much. Whatever it was – learn from it

Henry Ford – The only real mistakes are the ones which you learn nothing

2 – KISS

Keep it simple stupid. Stop overwhelming yourself with lists and more lists of all the stuff you’re going to do. By having huge ‘to-do lists’ you simply make yourself busy doing stuff. Being busy isn’t effective, you’re just busy for the sake of being busy. Instead come up with just a few things – your non-negotiable action that you will do day in day out.

Get rid of the fluff and do just a few meaningful things consistently until they become a habit

3 – Stop being a slave to time

You get to choose how you spend your time. You can either be a slave to time or you can set yourself up so that time serves you.

“But Paul I don’t have time to eat in the morning’’

Not having enough time is simply an objection of value. If you don’t value or believe in the outcome you won’t put the time and effort in

Make time for your goal and make it non negotiable. In life you will be pulled and tugged in every direction apart from the one you want to go in. The process to the goal is never linear but the key is consistency.

Aristotle – We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit

4 – Willpower is a waste, find purpose

Willpower in the short term will put you in a highly motivated state but the problem with willpower is that it feels too much like punishment. Willpower is unreliable, overrated and finite. Willpower gets you out running on a nice sunny day but when it’s 5am, cold, miserable and raining willpower seems to just disappear. On the other hand, purpose is very different. Purpose is a mission that you need to complete. It’s the intrinsic motivation that keeps you going no matter what. Purpose isn’t about getting more toned or more muscular it’s about become the best version of yourself.

5 – There is no way round it…time and effort are mandatory

We live in a world of instant gratification. I want to watch a movie, I just turn netflix on. I want to listen to an album, Spotify. Credit cards, microwaves and instantly flatten your belly gimmicks.

There is no way round it, in order to get into great shape you need to put the time and effort into it. You can’t just be at the top of the mountain you need to climb it and go through the journey.

It’s the time and effort that creates the journey and it’s the journey that creates the meaning in life.

6 – It’s not about perfection

You will have bad days when nothing goes right for you and you will feel like you just took two steps back away from your goal. Don’t dwell in a pity party, just accept it, get back up and start again.

So there you have it. My 6 tips on overcoming the odds and actually achieving your new year’s resolution.
