Havelock North Personal Trainer Paul Miller shares 18 Tips for Better Digestion and Health

When you eat food, it is not in a form that your body can use as nourishment. Food must be broken down into smaller molecules of nutrients before it is absorbed into the blood and carried into the cells to nourish and provide you with energy. Good digestion is critical for long term health. Here are 18 tips to improve your digestion, making you full great.

1. Eat organic.

Herbicides, fungicides and pesticides are highly toxic to your body and will limit your fat loss potential.

 

2. Eat before you get hungry.

When you’re staving you have a tendency to eat food as quickly as you can. It takes 20 minutes to start to feel full, however when you’re starving  you can easily polish off a big meal within 5 minutes.

 

3. Drink more water.

Aim to drink half your bodyweight (pounds) in ounces every-day.

 

4. Put sea salt on your meals.

This will help with the breakdown of proteins and aid with digestion.

 

5. Drink Kombucha or Kefir.

Both refreshing drinks, made through a fermentation process to aid in good gut health.

 

6. Cook in butter, coconut oil, ghee and lard.

These fats stay stable at high temperatures. They also have high levels of vitamin A, D, E and K which your body needs.

 

7. Don’t eat in front of the TV or computer.

When it’s time to eat, stop what you’re doing and focus on eating. Enjoy your food; think about the taste, the smell and the texture of the food you’re eating.

 

8. Chew your food.

Spend time actually chewing food, this will make digestion easier and will help the absorption of nutrients.

 

9. Avoid plastic water bottles that are not BPA free.

Plastic leaches toxins into the water that you then drink.

 

10. Steer clear of all processed foods.

They are often full of additives, preservatives, colours, emulsifiers, thickeners, bulking agents and flavourings, which will play havoc with your digestive system and lead to toxicity in your body

 

11. Don’t drink while you’re eating.

Drink 30 minutes before a meal and 30 minutes after a meal. Drinking and eating together will result in poor digestion.

 

12. Avoid gluten.

Gluten not only strips the gut lining but robs the body of essential nutrients.

 

13. Have a shot of apple cider vinegar before you eat.

It will assist with the breakdown of food in your gut and aid digestion

 

14. Eat more sauerkraut.

Sauerkraut is a fermented cabbage. The process of fermentation is incredibly good for your body, adding lots of beneficial gut bacteria.

 

15. Beef and lamb should be grass-fed.

The all-important rations of omega 3 to omega 6 is significantly better compared with grain-fed beef and lamb

 

16. Avoid artificial sweeteners.

They will make you fat and crazy. When you consume artificial sweeteners your tricking your body into thinking something sweet is coming. When you don’t get that sweet fix, your body will start to crave something sweet.

 

17. Sugar is sugar.

Yes there are better types of sugar to have for example cane sugar is significantly healthier than any artificial sweetener but all sugar eaten in abundance will make you fat.

 

18. Go easy on the starchy carbs.

They will break down into sugar too. If you eat too much starchy food you will get fat.
